The double standards in our main stream media are stunning. Having given up being upset by it I’m now more interested in its psycho-social aspect: is it lazy stupidity or pure corruption that produces the blind spots?
In discussing today’s Secretary of State confirmation hearing of Senator Hillary Clinton this morning on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Andrea Mitchell brought up the potential problems Bill’s Clinton Foundation might pose in terms of conflict of interest.
Wow. She is concerned about conflict of interest? Could’ve fooled me! After all the funny stuff going on in Obama’s presidential campaign financing, it’s strange that the MSM is suddenly concerned about conflicts of interest. And although there are groups pressuring the FEC to examine these admitted illegal tactics utilized by the Obama campaign, I seriously doubt any of Andrea’s journalistic skills will be employed to bring us that story.
Then Joe Scarborough, who occasionally calls out this type of one-sidedness, jumped right aboard the forget-the-logic bandwagon and brought up an editorial from this morning’s Wall Street Journal. He used this gem of a quote:
Here is the spectacle of a former President circling the globe to raise at least $492 million over 10 years for his foundation — much of it from assorted rogues, dictators and favor-seekers. We are supposed to believe that none of this — and none of his future fund-raising — will have any influence on Mrs. Clinton’s conduct as Secretary of State.
“Rogues, dictators and favor-seekers”? Well, that’s a bit of a twist. Although we may not have a complete list of the Foundation donors, the fact is that donors can specify the exact program they want their donation to go to, and only 2.6% of each donation goes toward management and administrative expenses (info found on the Clinton Foundation FAQ page). That’s pretty darned good for a charity. What would the MSM prefer Bill Clinton spend his time doing? Golfing…making speeches? Give the guy some credit here–at least he is bringing much good into the world through this Foundation. It’s more that I can say for you, MSM! (Sorry–couldn’t resist getting that dig in.)
Another hilarious thing about that quote is the part which came before it that somehow Joe neglected to mention:
Amid the holidays and economic news, this window on the Clinton political method has received less attention than it deserves.
Yea, that’s right, WSJ–a lot of things have received “less attention than [they] deserve”! It’s..um..sort of the main problem we’ve been having the entire election season! I do have to agree with their semi-conclusion, though:
The silence over this is itself remarkable. …this has the potential to complicate life for the new President.
I do understand the need for our Secretary of State to be completely unattached to foreign money sources and improprieties. Ask Hillary what you need to–she can handle the grilling and I’m sure she will arrange her personal life to suit the position. She has always been a public servant and I don’t expect she would shy away from any sacrifices necessary to execute this role with the high degree of integrity it demands. Neither I nor any Hillary supporter I know believes that silence in the media is the way to insure truthfulness and competency in our government.
The thing I’m not getting here is the double standard applied to this position and the presidency. In this world, we need a clean SOS, but the President can be covered in muck and slime and no one bats an eye. (It must be that holy glow emanating from him–it is rather blinding.) Obama is given a clean slate from primary caucus fraud, beyond reproach for admitted campaign finance illegalities, completely untainted by convicted felon and landlord Rezko, and is presumed removed from Blagoyevich’s swampy dealings. I could go on in detail, but you get the point.
So, faced with this obvious lack of journalistic integrity, I am just left to this conclusion about what type of thought processes are utilized by our MSM: six o’ dumb, half dozen o’ corrupt. Doesn’t matter really–in the end they are still the same rotten eggs.
